REGCURE

RegCure Review

Windows registry cleaners are abundant on the internet. They claim to stop errors, eliminate crashes, and speed up your computer. But do they work? Are they worth it? And are they safe?

We put the industry's leading registry repair program, RegCure by ParetoLogic (main site), to the test to see if we could answer those questions.

We wanted this RegCure review to be conclusive. We downloaded and installed the program onto a test laptop that was running extremely slow and taking a whopping 4 minutes, 43 seconds to boot up. This was simply unacceptable, especially since the owner of this particular laptop knew it used to run much faster and started up much more quickly.

Testing The Program
RegCure Review
To test the program we did a number of things. First we did a clean install with no other applications running. We then ran the scan. RegCure reported 725 errors on the first run. The second run reported 726 errors. This small inconsistency could have been due to a number of different factors, however the overall consistency is reassuring. (Some registry cleaners will report wildly different numbers on repeat scans.)

We then manually backed up the registry, since this laptop was a computer that was actually being used fairly often by its owner. Manually backing up the registry ensures that the computer can be restored if something terrible goes wrong, which is fairly unlikely. We also made a new Windows XP restore point which is another important safeguard. (In fact, these two steps are good ones to take on a regular basis to ensure that you can recover from accidental system failures or virus attacks.)

After registering the program and then cleaning the errors, we used the "Manage Startup" feature to clear some programs from the startup queue. This would have a direct effect on the boot speed.

Lastly, we cleaned up some unused icons from the desktop, which tends to be a minor memory hog.

The Results
Finally we were ready to test the results. We turned off the computer and readied our stopwatches. To our surprise, the computer took only 2 minutes and 44 seconds to boot up, effectively cutting the boot time in half.

The owner resumed use of her laptop as usual, and is pretty happy with the fact that she doesn't have to wait forever for the computer to boot up. She also reports that the computer runs much faster and she can run more programs at once with minimal slowdown.

Our RegCure review test run went well. We found RegCure to be a safe and effective utility that anyone can use. The program is not free, but you may download the program and run a scan for free. The cost is not prohibitive, and could potentially save you from hassle that comes with dealing with a sluggish, crashing computer. The company, ParetoLogic, does in fact stand behind its satisfaction guarantee, which might ease the minds of some consumers.

Some Concerns
Although we liked RegCure, nothing is perfect. We ran into a little glitch with the customer service when trying to get our program code for the full version for our RegCure review. Everything got cleared up in the end, but we would've liked to see the customer service be a bit more responsive.

RegCure doesn't have as many features as other programs, like PC Tools' Registry Mechanic. The good thing to come out of this, though, is that the program only packages what is actually necessary. (We thought many of Registry Mechanic's features to be useless)

Remember, registry cleaners will not fix everything that could be wrong with your computer. It's not a cure all solution. However, for their intended purpose they work very well.

Always back up your computer and the registry before proceeding with any registry cleaner.
